The tournament was the Gallatin Ranch Cup, which honors the legendary Gallatin Ranch where the Circle V Polo Company originated before it later moved to Aiken, South Carolina. When located at the Gallatin Ranch, after World War I, Goelet Gallatin formed the Circle V Polo Company, which was the premier polo operation in the world. Their breeding foundation was Black Rascal and Kemano. Broodmares were sent out by international players such as Hitchcock, Von Stade, Ambrose Clarke and Deveraux Milburn.

Since 1893, polo has been played in the Big Horn area and the Big Horn Polo Club remains the oldest continuously played polo club in the United States. In 2005, Skey Johnston and his family brought high goal polo to the Big Horn area at the Flying H Ranch. This has morphed to medium goal polo and brings many of the best polo players in the country to Big Horn Each summer.

Sheridan and Johnson Counties of Wyoming may be the best place in the world to raise horses. Why? Well, if you're invested into brood mares, you know that longevity is important. Horses in this area just seem to live longer. We have great feed and a pretty moderate climate, but it may boil down to the lack of sediment in the feed and teeth last longer.

Since the Plains Indians lived here, horses have enjoyed this amazing country where the rivers run north in Absaraka. The great bloodlines of the Indian ponies combined with genetics from the US Calvary and then introduced blood from Europe led to some amazing horses and horsemen that have passed down their legacies, which still exist today.

Polo was first played here in 1893 and The Big Horn Polo Club has been in existence since, making it the oldest continuously played polo club in the US.

Many horses have since been raised in this area to play at the highest level of polo around the world with many of the best players in the world choosing these horses.

Top polo pony breeders, such as The Flying H have chosen this area as well for their brood mare operations. The top selling horse at the Aiken Polo Pony Sale in 2007 was Cochise "Moment's Hope" for $170,000. This horse was born and raised near Sheridan, WY and the smoothest horse I ever rode.
